John has performed with various professional orchestras, chamber ensembles, concert bands, jazz ensembles, rock groups, and diverse world music groups. He has played venues from small festival platforms to Carnegie Hall.
A formally trained concert saxist and flautist, John has an extensive musical background in classical, jazz, and blues. With the combination of a gifted ear and classical training, John is both a virtuosic sight-reader and soulful improviser. View the complete resume here.
John holds a Bachelor of Music in Woodwind Performance from the University of the Pacific Conservatory of Music, where he studied both saxophone and flute under professors Don DaGrade and Mat Krejci. John was the first musician to receive the Saxophone Master Technician award from the Conservatory's saxophone studio. He has also received awards of recognition from the Monterey Bay and Reno jazz festivals for excellence in jazz performance. Before that, he started at nine with Big Band legend Bill St. Pierre, and Nuclear Whales founder and 'Cool Jerk' Dale Mills.
John is also a well-trained composer, producer and studio engineer. The owner of Locust Honey studios, he is as excellent behind the mic as he is in front of it. John does everything from bleeps and bloops in iPhone apps to orchestral scoring and recording. See the production tab for more information.
John has been educating players of all ages for most of his life. He teaches privately in Long Beach, CA and out of the JoMA school of music in Rolling Hills, CA. John teaches private 1-on-1 lessons, group lessons, and master classes. He teaches saxophone, clarinet, flute and digital recording/production.
